Training the dog in front of you
Dogs learn through experience, consequences, repetition, motivation and clear communication. My approach combines an understanding of canine behaviour and learning theory with practical handling and real-world experience.
No single rigid method
I don't believe that successful dog training comes from following one rigid method. Different dogs have different motivations, sensitivities, histories and behavioural patterns.
Training therefore needs to be adapted to the individual dog, while remaining fair, clear and consistent.
Rewards, play, food, movement, environmental access, boundaries and appropriate interruption can all form part of training, depending on the dog and the situation.
More than a dog that performs commands
The aim is to help owners develop:
- Better communication
- Clearer expectations
- Stronger engagement
- Greater confidence
- A dog that can make better choices in everyday life
Theory explains the why. Practice makes it work.
Modern training draws on established principles. They help us understand why behaviour occurs and how to change it.
But Paw-sitive is deliberately practical. The training itself needs to work for the dog and owner in front of us.
- Learning theory
- Reinforcement
- Habituation
- Desensitisation
- Counter-conditioning
- Motivation
- Emotional state
- Canine body language
Training that holds up when life gets distracting
Sessions take place where the behaviour actually matters: at home, on your normal walking routes, in woodland and in suitable public places around Haslemere.
- Walks
- Visitors
- Pubs & cafés
- Woodland
- Recall
- Travel
- Family homes
- Other dogs
- Everyday routines
Where behaviour may be affected by pain or health, I'll always recommend speaking to your vet first. Paw-sitive does not provide veterinary or medical advice.
Every great training journey starts with a conversation
